Kinja'd!!!

Been absent-mindedly toying with the idea of a second car for commuting to keep miles off my GTI. Consider ing that my work has EV chargers, and EV/PHEV depreciation is quite steep ...plus I love the interior, consensus is that it’s really fun to drive, and according to Consumer Reports the reliability is actually quite good, I’m finding one of these pretty appealing. On the other hand, it’s not really something I can rationally justify, it would just be cool to have. If I really want to get a second car, financially speaking, I’d be better off going sub-$10k and getting a beater. Meh

Making an environmental choice very rarely saves money, but someone’s gotta do it. I guess. What’s in it for me? Oh, a rebate? But only if I buy new?

Maybe later...

I hear this, I really want something electric/hybrid since stop and go traffic has gotten worse this summer. Hate seeing my GTI barley get 20 mpg. Wish my work had charging access.

We have a resident i3 owner who could chime in about it.

You can stay sub-$10k and get a pretty new EV still too. Fiat 500e, or a Spark EV. I have personal experience with the latter, just finishing up my lease on one next month. It’s not as stylish as the i3 but is a great car...and you can have one as new as 2016 for under $10k , so plenty of battery warranty left on it too. Highly recommend.

Wow, that’s one I hadn’t even considered. I remember it had like 400lb-ft of torque. Might be a bit on the small side for me but worth considering...

I’m 5’9” and have no issues. My FIL uses it when he’s in town and at 6’2”ish he fits fine as well with the seat further back (though nobody will fit behind him) . We have our backup infant car seat in the back and have used it to get around town with the little one and my wife (they sit in the back seat, since front passenger seat is pretty tight (although not unsuable for someone under 5'8" or so) with the car seat in.

It actually has 4 doors, and I’ve transported 4 adults in it no problem. I’d seriously give it a try, it’s a decent car and is dirt cheap in the used market. Yes, earlier models had 400lb-ft, the later ones were rated at “only” 327. As long as you ease in to it and manage the torque steer and wheelspin it’s a rocketship off the line. And given it’s size is an amazing little city car.

You can get a Leaf as long as it’s like 2013 or newer (older than that, the battery is terrible). My parents bought a 2014 loaded for $20,000 CAD from a dealer (US car in Canada). It’s good for 150kms range in the summer and has DC fast charging capabilities as well. Not a bad way to get around, and even though gas is cheap now, it won’ be forever. Get into an EV before that situation changes.

Oh also, EV torque is addictive, and you won’t miss performance cars that much as it’s more usable fun since it only lasts to about 60-70kph.

There are at least 3 of us on here that drive i3's and we all seem to love them. Hit me up if you want to know anything. I’m not as versed as phenotyp and It’s Carbon Fiber, So It’s Basically A Because Racecar.

Oh, pretty. Most of the ones I see are grey or beige. Is it the REX? And do you have a charger at home? I likely  wouldn’t have access to anything other than a 120v standard outlet, but with my commute that shouldn’t be an issue

It is a Rex with the larger 94Ah battery. I do have a 240v SIEMENS charger at home that I recently installed. I was originally using the 120v charger and stopping at a quick charger every once in awhile, but my commute is 70+ miles a day, so I needed the level 2 charger.
